Te Arawa Fisheries Iwi Partnerships Seagrass Project

Monitoring and Transplanting Rimurehia in Maketu and Little Waihi Estuary

Te Arawa Fisheries Iwi Partnerships have sponsored a TAKT project to monitor rimurehia (seagrass) in the Maketu and Little Waihi estuary, and to trial transplanting to encourage growth. Rimurehia is critical for ensuring a healthy and bountiful estuary. It is even better than trees in dealing with climate change remediation.

Our project started on 23rd July 2025 and will run for 12 months. Pia Bennett, Hine and Kata Kerr, and Kaszius Mohi-Wirihana undertook the first survey.
